D.C. Councilman Jack Evans, who represents a district including downtown Washingtonm will run to be chairman of the D.C. Council. Evans' announcement comes a day after current Council Chairman Vincent Gray announced he would run for mayor.
Gray and current Mayor Adrian Fenty, both Democrats, will face each other in a September primary before November's general election.
Evans, who represents neighborhoods including Chinatown, Shaw, Dupont Circle, Georgetown and downtown Washington, is the council's second in command as chair pro tempore. Evans will not have to give up his current position to run because he is not up for re-election until 2012.
Evans first won election to the council in 1991.
