Holmes-Norton Supports Healthcare Overhaul

DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton says the health care overhaul that passed the House will insure thousands of District residents.

Before Sunday’s vote, Holmes Norton spoke on the House floor, saying she supports the bill on behalf of her six-hundred-thousand constituents that approve of the bill but have no vote.

Holmes Norton says more than one-hundred-thirty-four thousand District residents will get tax credits and other assistance to buy insurance.

She says the District has been paying fifty million dollars a year to cover the costs of the DC Health Care Alliance, "for people who do not qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford health insurance out of our own local funds. This bill will take this off of the District and put onto the federal government," she says.

The president is expected to sign the bill this week.
