Extended unemployment benefits end today, and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton says Congress will push this week to continue them.
As many as 4,000 people in the district could lose their unemployment insurance. The Senate failed to vote last week on a plan passed by the House that would continue the aid to would-be workers.
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) says he supports the plan, but needs to see that it is paid for.
At the Annual Tax Fair at the Washington Convention Center, where district residents learn financial literacy and have their taxes prepared, Norton tried to quell the fears of the unemployed.
"But there are people here who are paying income taxes who essentially had their income from unemployment insurance this year," Norton said. "I don't want people to feel that because unemployment insurance runs out as of Sunday, nothing could be done because Jim Bunning in the Senate decided he wanted to stop it."
Senate leaders hope to take up the measure again this week.
