VA State Legislators Set To Reject Key McDonnell Budget Recommendations

In Virginia, budget proposals are due out this weekend from House and Senate committees. Legislators say the budgets will contain painful cuts, but will differ from what Gov. Bob McDonnell laid out earlier this week.

House budget writers say the two-year spending plan they'll offer Sunday does not include McDonnell's proposal to force five unpaid days off a year for state workers.

But they say the House budget will include most of the $2.1 billion in cuts that McDonnell suggested Wednesday.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Colgan, of Prince William County, says he thinks the furloughs are a good option. But he says his committee's version will reject key McDonnell proposals, including much of the governor's $730 million in public education cuts.
