Driving tips for snow covered roads.

Most motorists following simple advice have stayed off the roads during this latest blizzard. If you count yourself among those who have to travel on some roads which remain hazardous, local authorities have some advice for you.

If you're considered essential personnel and must drive on icy roads, Montgomery County Police Captain Paul Starks recommends you first consider some basic guidelines.

"Headlights should be on; you should make sure your wipers are functioning properly. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, plan your route and know your route," says Starks.

Using a four wheel drive instead of rear wheel drive can give you the advantage on a snow covered road. However, Capt Starks says there's an important limitation you should keep in mind.

"What four wheel drive operators have to remember is that they don't have four wheel stop. In these conditions, it's treacherous for all vehicles whether it's a rear wheel drive, or all wheel drive.

Above all, Starks urges you to plan ahead and take your time.
