(This Week) BUSBOYS & POETS If you prefer your salt on the rim of a glass instead of shooting out of a city snow truck, you can beat a path to the bar/restaurant at Busboys and Poets, with locations in northwest D.C. at 5th & K Streets and the U Street corridor, and in Shirlington, Virginia near Signature Theatre. These community-minded canteens host the Coal Free Future Project, with award-winning journalist and author Jeff Biggers, filmmaker Ben Evans and organizer/actress Stephanie Pistello, as they discuss issues of mountaintop removal mining. You can also see the ecological docu-comedy YERT, short films about environmentally-friendly road trips), along with other readings and open-mic sessions to ward away cabin fever.

(Snow Dates) HEAD FOR THE HILLS The slickest city-dwellers who are in-the-know about the snow are checking out hot local sledding spots on the website We Love DC. The Hills will point you to places where people are sliding with purpose, listing sweet spots in DC and Northern Virginia. The site also lists ways to create snow-worthy vessels from everyday objects, including trash bags, laundry baskets and large cookie sheets.

(Ongoing) BIG DIG If you're tired of shoveling, let someone else do the digging. The archaeologists of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History have about 2 million objects they've dug out of the ground, from old bones to stone and ceramic artifacts.
