A Utah senator has filed legislation that would prevent D.C. from implementing a gay marriage bill until residents vote on the issue.

Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah) introduced the legislation Tuesday. The bill would ban the district from issuing same-sex marriage licenses until residents are allowed to vote on the issue.

The measure is one of several filed in Congress about the D.C. bill, which was passed by the city council in December but has not yet taken effect. Because the city is a federal district, Congress has final say over its laws.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), a Republican, has filed similar legislation in the House. The gay marriage bill is currently in a period of congressional review but appears poised to go into effect in March.
