A police officer in Virginia's Fairfax County who fatally shot an unarmed, mentally ill man in November will not face criminal charges.
Fairfax Commonwealth's Attorney Raymond Morrogh says the officer thought 52-year-old David Alan Masters had hit another officer with his SUV and was reaching for a gun.
The shooting happened after Masters was pulled over under suspicion of stealing flowers from a local business.
In his ruling, Morrogh said nobody except the officer saw what happened, and he found no evidence of malicious intent or recklessness.
Authorities have not identified the officer, who's 26-years-old and has been on the force six years. The officer remains assigned to administrative duties while police now conduct an internal investigation.
