APPOMATTOX, Va. (AP) Virginia State Police police are reporting "multiple fatals" and injuries involving a lone gunman in central Virginia.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said more than 100 law enforcement officials have surrounded the gunman in a wooded area just outside of Appomattox.

Geller said the shootings had resulted in multiple deaths and injuries but she could not provide a number for the dead and injured.

The violence began shortly after noon Tuesday when an injured man was found on a rural stretch of road. When police responded, they were fired upon, including a state police helicopter that had to land with a ruptured fuel tank. The officers were not injured.

It is not known what prompted the shootings.
