The district's same-sex marriage bill is now on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers will have 30 working days to review the measure.

To block the marriage bill, President Obama, and both houses of the Democrat-controlled Congress, would have to agree on a disapproval resolution. D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton says that's unlikely to happen.

The congressional calendar isn't set in stone, but Norton believes same-sex couples will be able to wed by late February or early March.

Opponents of the measure, meanwhile, continue to press for a public vote on the issue. So far, their efforts have been unsuccessful--the city's board of elections has ruled such ballot measures would discriminate against gays and lesbians. Opponents are appealing the decision.
