AOL is laying off as many as 1,200 employees because not enough workers accepted buyouts. A spokeswoman for the company says only 1,100 volunteered to leave, and that means the company will need to shed up to 1,200 positions to reach its announced reduction target of up to 2,300.
That's about one-third of it's workforce. The spokeswoman says AOL is laying off some employees in the U.S. now, although most of the layoffs are coming on Wednesday. She also says the company began laying off employees in its European offices on Monday.
AOL said in November that it would take $200 million in charges for severance and restructuring-related costs. AOL separated from Time Warner last month.
