Environmentalists and policy makers are in Washington for a three-day conference on the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. One local group wants to insure something useful is accomplished.
The Choose Clean Water Conference is designed to focus on President Obama's executive order on Chesapeake Bay restoration. That directive, issued in May of 2009, gives the Environmental Protection Agency leading authority in the effort to restore the bay.
Over the weekend, 43,000 Chesapeake Bay area residents sent letters to the EPA demanding stronger action to protect the bay.
A spokesperson for Environment Maryland says advocates are concerned the EPA appears to be backing away from tough measures it had previously proposed.
Federal officials point out they are in the process of drawing up a detailed pollution "diet" for the bay, due by the end of this year. The conference runs through Tuesday.
