Metro Board Proposes Up To 10-Cent Fare Hike

WASHINGTON (AP) Metro's board of directors is proposing a fare hike to help fill a $40 million budget gap. The proposed emergency increase of up to 10-cents per trip for train, bus and MetroAccess fares to bring in additional revenue in the last few months of the fiscal year, which ends in July.

The board is also considering other cost-saving measures, such as service cuts. It will make a decision later this month, but it called for public comment and hearings within the next two weeks.

The board it is set to discuss possible additional fare increases and service cuts to make up an estimated $175 million deficit in the preliminary $1.4 billion operating budget for fiscal 2011.
