Opponents of gay marriage in the district are pressing the courts to let voters decide the issue. Opponents say they are filing paperwork today with the city's board of elections to overturn the district's same sex marriage bill.
Bishop Harry Jackson says he wants to put a referendum on the next election ballot. Jackson and other opponents were in court earlier today to argue that their other attempt to put the issue before voters, an initiative defining marriage as between a man and a woman, should be allowed to go forward.
The city's board of elections dismissed the motion because it said the measure would violate the D.C. Human Rights Act.
The same sex marriage bill was passed in December, signed by the mayor, and right now is under congressional review. The law could take effect in March.
