Newly appointed chair of the Chesapeake Executive Council, Lisa Jackson has promised a renewed effort to cleanup the Chesapeake Bay. Her appointment comes, as a deadline for bay restoration expires.
In 2000, elected officials in the region pledged to cleanup the Bay by 2010. That deadline passed with the new year, but Jackson who is also the Federal EPA administrator says her office is now prepared to accelerate the effort to cleanup the bay.
"We began with President Obama's executive order. One of the most significant steps towards a comprehensive bay cleanup in 25-years," says Jackson.
That directive mandates the EPA lead the effort to restore the bay, setting two-year milestones for implementing pollution controls. Jackson says the federal government will do its part.
"We also need to have the backstop of enforcement, if we can't bring people to the table cooperatively," she says.
Six bay states and the district are set to receive $11 million dollars from the EPA in 2010 for regulatory enforcement.
