The Washington Redskins have fired Coach Jim Zorn after the team's worst season in 15 years.

Zorn's dismissal has been speculated for months and expected as the team headed to a disappointing 4-12 record following yesterday's season-ending 23-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

In a statement released by the team, new general manager Bruce Allen says "the status quo is not acceptable" and says Zorn was informed of the decision shortly after the team returned from San Diego early today. Allen, has been the GM for three weeks, and says he "felt it was necessary to not waste a moment of time building this team into a winner."

Zorn was 12-20 over two seasons as head coach. It is rumored that Redskins owner Daniel Synder has his sights set on bringing former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan to Washington for the job.

Zorn's replacement will be the seventh head coach hired by Snyder since he bought the team in 1999.

The Redskins will hold a press conference at 12:30 today with more information expected.
