By Bill Redlin

Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold has signed a measure that's necessary to move ahead toward putting slot machines at Arundel Mills Mall.

The signing paves the way for Maryland's largest slot machine facility. Cordish Company plans to put 4,750 slot machines at a facility at the mall. The zoning bill Leopold signed was approved by the county council Monday night.

After delaying a vote for months, the council also approved a measure allowing slots at Laurel Park. Leopold vetoed that bill. He says he based his decision on statewide voter support for a constitutional amendment to legalize slot machines last year. Sixty percent of those who voted supported the measure.

Opponents to the mall slots say they will try to halt the project in a county referendum.
