Transportation Departments worked round the clock to clear major roads in the area on Sunday but commuters may still face serious challenges getting to work Monday morning.

Major highways in Northern Virginia looked a lot better Sunday than they did on Saturday.

But VDOT spokesperson Joan Morris says getting to those roads from residential side streets may be the real hurdle for Monday morning commuters.

"For the person that lives in a subdivision, if they havent seen a plow it might be today, it might be Tuesday before they see a plow," says Morris. "They're going to have to be patient."

Alexandria resident Mason Hopkins, who spent an hour scraping snow off his car on Sunday, said the morning commute was going to be even worse than people realized.

"I think its going to be worse, because the snow is turning to ice now" says Hopkins.

Morris says VDOT workers were scrambling to clear commuter parking lots on Sunday.

And many spent Sunday night salting roads already cleared by plows hoping to head off problems caused by freezing temperatures overnight.
