The Woodbridge campus of Northern Virginia Community College is closed until noon as police investigate a student they say fired a rifle at a teacher there Tuesday.

Prince William County Police say the suspect is 20-year-old Jason Hamilton of Manassas. Hamilton is a student at the school, and was taken into custody shortly after police arrived on the scene. He will be charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm in a school zone.

Anthony Mellis is a campus police officer who heard the shots from outside the building. He says when police found Hamilton inside the building, the young man admitted to the shooting.

"He was calm and nonchalant, to describe him," Mellis says. "He wasnt really aggressive or anything like that. He obeyed all our commands, and we took him into custody."

Police say Hamilton fired two times at the teacher. The teacher reportedly ducked to the floor, and was not hurt. No other injuries have been reported.

Some students heard about the shooting when a teacher ran into the cafeteria screaming about a shooter.

Josh Hernandez says he knew things were serious when he got outside and saw police.

"I saw, running to safe zone I guess a sniper running by me. It was kind of weird," Hernandez says.

The campus was locked down for several hours, as police conducted a campus sweep.
