The District is spending nearly $1.4 million additional dollars to prevent more escapes from the New Beginnings youth rehabilitation center.

The Fenty administration announced that it's shifting $1.36 million within the Department of Real Estate Services "for construction tasks related to the completion of the New Beginnings facility."

A spokesman for the mayor tells the Washington Examiner most of the funds cover security upgrades and enhancements. The $45 million, 60-bed Laurel campus opened in May, replacing the Oak Hill Juvenile Detention Center. Several youths escaped in the first weeks it was open.

Mayor Adrian Fenty and Attorney General Peter Nickles complained the center was replete with flaws, including doors that did not secure properly and windows which were not well secured.
