Independent safety inspectors are on Metro tracks today, for the first time since 2007. The three teams are checking safety procedures for crews working along the rails.
This comes after Metro initially said it could only allow inspectors from the Tri-State Oversight Committee, or TOC, if accompanied by metro safety officers. Oversight committee members dispute that. They say they were repeatedly denied any access at all.
Safety has been an ongoing concern. A collision in June killed nine people. Two metro workers have been killed since that time. A Congressional hearing on Metro safety is expected to be held by the end of this month.
James Gandolfini Dies; 'Sopranos' Actor Was 51
