Fifteen-year-old Maddie Lother is in the driver's seat of a Honda Accord. In the backseat is Dorean Collins, also 15, who's talking on her cell phone. "Hey, how are you doing," Dorean says, as Maddie tries to focus. "Yeah, I'm in the car."
It's only a simulation. The car is parked and, besides, Maddie doesn't even have a driver's license yet. She and her fellow Girl Scouts are at an arena in Prince George's County, Md. to learn about the dangers of driving while distracted.
Dorean says the experience has opened her eyes. "I've been excited to drive," she says, "But now, seeing all the distractions that can happen ... it's kind of scary."
Scout leaders also told the girls that when they're driving, they should let someone else be their "D.T." - designated texter.
