The Prince William County board of supervisors has approved a disputed revision to a federal policy on immigration. The eight member board voted unanimously to accept the revised version of the so-called 287g directive. Issued by the department of Homeland security, 287g gives local police departments like Prince William County full authority to enforce Federal immigration laws.
The new agreement revokes part of that authority and requires local police to get approval from immigration and customs enforcement before an arrest can be made solely on the basis of an immigration status violation. Shortly before the vote County board chair Corey Stewart gave his opinion of the revised measure.
"I'm just disappointed in Ms. Napolitano and President Obama for this directive. I think it's placing the citizens of Prince William County in danger from criminal illegal aliens who will be released back into the community. I just think it's irresponsible."
Stewart also acknowledged the board had no choice but to accept the revisions, or loose the authority altogether.
