Bike Station Hints At Future Of Public Transportation

Play associated audio

Washingtonians now have more options to bike their way around the Metro area. D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty cuts the ribbon on a $4 million facility outside Union Station called the Bikestaion. It's a glass and steel structure that can house more than 130 bikes. It's meant to make biking more convenient for riders.

Gabe Klein heads the city's transportation department. He says the city plans to treat bike riding as its own transit system. "If you study Paris, Montreal, where they put in a critical mass of bikes and bike facilities as well, the uptake is just through the roof,' says Klein. "So it goes from being a secondary mode, as people typically think of cycling, to potentially a primary mode."

Daily users pay $2 to park inside the Bikestation while annual members have 24/7 access using a pass key.
