Repaired Engines To Return To MARC's Penn Line

Service on MARC's Penn Line could be a little smoother soon with the return of four electric locomotives that have been sitting in an Amtrak repair yard for almost three years.

MARC has had to run short, crowded trains on the Penn line between Baltimore and Washington in recent months due to a shortage of engines. The problems also have caused more train cancellations.

Four locomotives that could ease the pinch have been sidelined for years by electrical glitches. But now Amtrak thinks it's solved the problem. The Maryland Transit Administration has already received one of the engines, and is testing it.

Meanwhile, a mechanical officer with Amtrak tells the Baltimore Sun another could be back by next week with the two others to follow before the end of the year.

A spokesman for the state department of transportation tells the paper cautious optimism is the feeling there.
