Parents smile and cheer on Cardozo's athletic field during a Saturday morning Pop Warner football game. But inside the school, away from the cheering crowd, laid-off teachers are saying goodbye.
More than 15 people are leaving, according to one teacher, who described the mood of the school as "solemn."
Chaunna Crayton, the parent of a 9th grader, says the layoffs could be a positive thing, if they get rid of ineffective teachers. "I'm sad in this recession that they had to lose their jobs," says Crayton, "but we need to get more quality for our children."
The teachers had until 2 p.m. Saturday to gather their belongings.
