Green Energy Co-op Invites Neighbors To Go Solar

Play associated audio

The Mt. Pleasant Solar Cooperative in Northwest Washington is helping all of D.C. go solar. At the Eco-Living Fair in Mount Pleasant on Saturday, children of Co-op members are making T-shirts while their parents explore products from green energy vendors.

The Co-op has spent three years negotiating bulk prices with vendors and lobbying the city council for green energy legislation. Now some 50 families have finally started fitting their homes with affordable solar panels and grids.

Co-op member David McCurdy is ecstatic about his energy savings. "All I know is my meter's running backwards at the moment," says David.

The average start-up cost is roughly $25,000, but the Co-op says incentives and rebates available to D.C. residents bring the actual cost down to about $9,000, or less than an average car loan.

The Mt. Pleasant Solar Co-op now is spreading the word to find the next 50 neighbors to go solar.
