Virginia Railway Express is considering eliminating its youth discount to keep adults from abusing the program. VRE trains run from Manassas and Fredericksburg to the District, with tickets costing up to $10.30 for a single ride.
VRE gives a 50 percent discount to people 21 years of age and under. But a spokesman tells the Washington Examiner the agency noticed it was selling more youth tickets and not seeing a corresponding rise in the number of students on the trains. He tells the paper VRE is looking to put some safeguards in place to make sure adults aren't taking advantage of the youth price.
VRE estimates a crackdown could net the agency as much as $300,000. There would have to be a public hearing and vote before any changes are made and as of now no date has been set to move forward.
