Schools in Montgomery County, Maryland are instituting a partial hiring freeze in order to save money. County Council President Phil Andrews says it's not clear how much money the freeze will save.
There are five exemptions to the hiring freeze: Principals, special education teachers, Head Start para-educators who help with pre-school classes, English-as-Second-Language teachers, and bus drivers.
Such budget cutting during a school year is rare, but ongoing reductions in state money for local governments have forced the measure. Just last week, county executive Isiah Leggett outlined $30 million in additional budget cuts, $10 million of which must come from schools. The council will vote on them next month.
