D.C. Council To Adopt Code Of Conduct

In the wake of this summer's contracting scandal involving Marion Barry, the D.C. Council is getting ready to adopt a new code of conduct for its members.

The proposed code lists six ethical pitfalls that lawmakers will need to avoid, including using public office for private gain, giving preferential treatment to anyone, and damaging the public's confidence in the city government.

Council Chair Vincent Gray says there are already about ten pages of ethical rules on the books in D.C., but the council has never crafted its own policy. Gray is set to propose the resolution during tomorrows council session.

Meanwhile, the probe into a contract councilman Marion Barry gave a then-girlfriend continues to move forward. Gray says the former federal prosecutor leading the investigation has interviewed about 15 city officials and contacted about 20 businesses and city agencies.
