Pierre Withdraws From Annapolis Mayoral Race

The first African-American woman to win the Democratic nomination for mayor of Annapolis, Maryland, has withdrawn from the race. The announcement came after revelations about Zina Pierre's financial problems, including a foreclosed home in Prince George's County, and state liens for unpaid income taxes.

Pierre's victory in the Democratic primary put her on track to become Annapolis' first African-American mayor. Campaign spokesman Michael Matthews says the 44-year-old political consultant -- who grew up in Annapolis and served in the Clinton administration -- withdrew from the race for ''personal reasons.''

City code requires the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee to choose a replacement nominee by October 2nd. The Democratic contender will face Dave Cordle, an alderman on the Republican ticket, and Chris Fox, a small-business owner running as an Independent.
