In these final weeks of the governor's race in Virginia, each candidate is trying to draw distinctions between himself and his opponent. One difference gaining traction, their responses to the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech.
Democrat Creigh Deeds has a record of supporting gun rights. But in response to the shooting at Virginia Tech, he supports closing the so-called gun show loophole. That allows people to sell weapons at gun shows without conducting background checks.
Republican Bob McDonnell disagrees. He responded to the shootings by focusing on social services.
The National Rifle Association has endorsed McDonnell, in part because of his opposition to regulating gunshow sales. That reversed its endorsement of Deeds in 2005 when he ran against McDonnell for attorney general.
