New D.C. Farmers Market Closes Downtown Street During Rush Hour

Once a week, a street near the White House is saying goodbye to cars, and hello to cut flowers, fresh produce, baked goods and cheese.

Close a downtown street during rush hour, and you might expect people to gripe and groan. Not so on Vermont Avenue between H and I Streets, where hundreds of people flood the new farmers market, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The D.C. Department of Transportation says it doesn't forsee any traffic snarls, since only 4,600 cars use that stretch of Vermont Avenue each day. It will be closed from 1 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays.
