
There's a plan to modify one thousand D.C .taxicabs to run on propane, thanks to federal stimulus dollars The $9 million grant, part of the 780-billion dollar government stimulus plan, will also fund the construction of several propane filling stations.
The Washington Post reports the hybrid cabs will burn a some gasoline but generate most of their energy from propane. A spokesperson form Alliance Autogas, the company overseeing the conversion says the plan is expected to reduce each vehicle's greenhouse emissions by 20 percent, and save up to 3.9 million gallons of gas a year
At least one cab company owner says he hopes the propane taxis will help keep fares down while allowing the company to maintain their standard gas vehicles.
