Children Of Deployed Troops Receive Comfort Quilts

Children with parents serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will receive a special kind of comfort, thanks to more than 200 volunteers in our area.

Men and women gather around tables in the concession area of RFK Stadium. They are making brightly-colored quilts.

Jason Keefer holds a pair of scissors. "We're working on Grace MacAlany's quilt right now. We've got eight or nine pictures of her with her father," says Keefer.

The quilts feature fabric photographs of children and their deployed parents. "They'll be going to the child, to perhaps, ya know, cry in, or just to comfort them," says Keefer.

Operation Kid Comfort is one of 50 projects held in the D.C. area for the inaugural 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, part of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.
