VA College Voters May Receive Clarification on Where to Register

Play associated audio

College students in Virginia may have some new rules to clarify where they can register to vote. In previous election cycles local registrars around Virginia have offered conflicting opinions on whether student voters could register with their dorm addresses. Now the state board of election has approved new voter residency rules aimed at settling the issue. The rules would allow college students to register to vote at their campus addresses. They say a person's primary home is the physical place where he or she lives and is considered to be the center of a person's "domestic, social and civil life."

The U.S. Department of Justice must approve the rules before they can be implemented.
