Leaders around the country and the world are lionizing Kennedy today as one of America's most influential public figures.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.)says that she has known Kennedy since the 1960s. She was invited to testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Aging, which Kennedy chaired. Later, when Mikulski became one of two women in the senate, she says Kennedy reached out to her--she calls him her Sir Galahad. She says he changed the people and the world around him for the better. She says she joins the nation and the world in mourning.

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, who also heads the Democratic National Committee, is extending his condolences to Kennedy's family on behalf of the Commonwealth. He calls Kennedy an undeniable force in the halls of Congress and says he will miss his compassionate voice and remarkable leadership.
