GOP Leader Calls for Probe into Prank

Play associated audio

The chairman of Baltimore County's Republican Party is calling on legislators to investigate the role Baltimore police played in a state lawmaker's marriage proposal.

Party Chairman Chris Cavey wants lawmakers to probe whether delegate Jon Cardin, a Baltimore County Democrat, used his state office in abusing police resources for a prank before he proposed on Aug. 7 in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

A police marine unit and the police helicopter took part in the stunt. Baltimore police have launched an internal investigation. Delegate Brian McHale, chair of the Maryland legislature's ethics committee, says any action should wait until that investigation is complete.

Cardin has apologized to the police and offered to reimburse the department for any expenses incurred.
