Fewer people rode Metro trains and buses in July than in the same period last year.
Ridership on Metrorail fell just over 2 percent in July compared to the same period last year, that's after a near 2% increase for June. Bus ridership fell by four percent compared to last July.
A year ago, usage rates for the transit agency hit all-time highs as gasoline prices spiked, but lower gas prices and job losses have intervened since then.
The drop also comes after a June 22 crash on Metrorail that killed nine people and injured 70 more. However, Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel tells the Washington Examiner that it's unclear if the decline in ridership is due to the crash, falling gas prices, or the economy.
