Green Lights for Holiday Street Traffic

July 05, 2009 - Drivers leaving the National Mall after the fireworks had the task of negotiating bumper to bumper traffic. Traffic along Constitution Avenue near the Mall was at a near standstill in the final 15 minutes of the fireworks display. But minutes later, green traffic lights seemed to light the entire length of Seventh Avenue. The city re-timed its traffic lights along major roads like Georgia and New York Avenues to move people out of the city faster. This is the fifth year in a row the city re-timed its lights to accommodate 4th of July traffic. The program also allows the city to test its emergency evacuation plans.
