Graduation Rates Out for Region's High School Students

June 09, 2009 - Fewer than half of the students in D.C.'s public high schools graduate within four years, according to a new study. Researchers affiliated with the publication Education Week looked at data from from 1996 to 2006, the latest year with available federal figures. Their study found that the graduation rate in the District fell to 48.8 percent in 2006, although that number does not include public charter schools.

Meanwhile graduation rates in Maryland held steady at 73.5 percent, while the study showed those in Virginia dropping from 73.4 percent to just over 69 percent. Officials in Virginia are disputing that number though. A spokesman for the Department of Education tells the Virginian-Pilot newspaper that the estimate doesn't account for student mobility or correctly account for ninth graders. Virginia's own calculations show a 73.8 percent graduation rate in 2006.

Mosquitoes in Fairfax Test Positive for West Nile Virus

June 09, 2009 - Officials in Fairfax County say mosquitoes in the area are testing positive for the "West Nile Virus." The near constant and heavy rains this spring means more breeding grounds for mosquitoes and a higher chance of West Nile. These so-called floodwater mosquitoes are very aggressive and because of that are prone to attack people. Easy things to do to protect yourself include using insect repellents containing DEET, wear long, light-colored clothing, and clean out gutters, wading pools and bird baths once a week.

Senior managers at the shelter say Renee Paige was a resident until a month ago when she was dismissed for not obeying house rules.
