Baltimore Plans to Buy Mortgage of Senator Theater

April 13, 2009 - Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon says the city will buy the mortgage of the financially ailing Senator Theater, which is facing foreclosure auction. The 70-year-old movie house stopped showing first-run films last month. Its owner had failed to meet payroll.

The theater owes $1.2 million to First Mariner Bank, and the bank had scheduled a foreclosure auction for April 20th. But a task force recommended the city purchase the theater. Deputy Mayor Andrew Frank says that should help ensure the Senator ends up in the hands of someone who wants to run it as a theater or performing arts venue.

The city says it will foreclose and auction the theater. If no one buys it, the city would try to find a new operator itself.

Money Sought For Pedestrian Safety in Montgomery County

April 13, 2009 - In Maryland, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett is proposing spending more money on pedestrian safety programs, even as the county faces a $520 million deficit. Leggett suggests spending an additional $642,000 to reset traffic signals so pedestrians have more time to cross streets. He also wants to hire consultants for an outreach program and speed up the implementation of a program to make children's walks to school safer.

Council President Phil Andrews tells the Washington Examiner that additions to the budget will be difficult to approve unless they address an urgent need. Council staff say they are recommending that some of Leggett's proposed increases be scaled back.
