January 22, 2009 - Congress's Inaugural Committee has apologized to several thousand ticket holders turned away from President Barack Obama's swearing-in ceremony. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies said in a statement Wednesday that it "deeply regrets" that some ticket holders weren't able to get to their seats, or patches of grass.
Large crowds had been prevented from passing through check points when screening equipment malfunctioned and police officers had to screen people by hand, creating massive backlogs. In another case, thousands of people were trapped in the third street tunnel where they had been told to go by police only to find there was no way out. In yet another instance, an angry crowd broke down a security barrier and barreled past police just in time to watch the Inauguration.
The committee said that, on the whole, the Inauguration was "extraordinarily successful and peaceful" but promised to examine all procedures to avoid future problems.

January 22, 2009 - Many tickets to see the Washington Nationals will cost less this season. The team is lowering individual-sale ticket prices on 14,000 seats, and it says it won't be raising prices on any of the seats at Nationals Park.
In September, the club announced it was lowering season-ticket prices for 7,500 seats, mostly in the outfield sections. Now the Nats say they are dropping the prices of some individual-sale tickets as well. Tickets for more than 4,500 seats now cost at least $10 less than they did before. Those seats include 3000 in the ballpark's lower bowl.
The Nationals averaged about 29,000 fans per home game in 2008. That put the team 19th in attendance in the major leagues.

January 22, 2009 - Police say a graduate student from China has been killed at Virginia Tech. Another student is being charged.
Twenty-two year old Xin Yang was decapitated with a kitchen knife, in a campus cafe by another graduate student who knew her.
Yang was killed last night after arriving on campus from Beijing, to begin studying accounting.
Her accused attacker, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu of Ningbo, China, knew the victim. But no motive for the slaying has been found. School records show Haiyang was listed as one of Xin's emergency contacts.
Haiyang has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail.
The murder is the first on campus since a mass killing in 2007, when a student gunman shot 32 people and then took his own life. A spokesman for Virginia Tech said their new alert system sent out messages to 30,000 people by e-mail, text messages and voice mails after the suspect was in custody.
