(Jan 7-18) HOW THEATER FAILED AMERICA Actor and comedian Mike Daisey returns to sink his razor-sharp wit into the play How Theater Failed America, at Woolly Mammoth Theatre in D.C., opening tonight. Daisey delves into a subject he knows well - the American theater - examining the sublimely crass to the genuinely ugly, as he seeks to understand why beautiful new theaters stand empty as cathedrals, the "successful" working actor must live life like a migrant farmhand, and why this country's arts culture is unwilling to speak or listen to its own nation.
(Thursday nights) CHAW PAJAMA PARTY The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop is holding its CHAW Pajama Party for ages 3 to 5, Thursday nights starting tomorrow from 6:15pm to 7pm. You can get the little ones ready for bed with the stories, music, and relaxing movement taught in this early childhood class that stimulates creativity with storytelling. Each session will focus on a new "nighttime" tale, during which parents stay and play.

Based on the most recent available data from the 2006 school year, Education Week magazine's 'Chance-for-Success' Index gave the District of Columbia the worst grade: D+. President Elect Barack Obama has tapped Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia to be the next chairmen of the Democratic National Committee. That means for the next year, Kaine will have two jobs: leading the party and running Virginia.
Next week, the general assembly will meet in Richmond to try and close an estimated 3 billion dollar shortfall - its one of the worst budget deficits in state history and some Republicans have questioned if the Governors full attention will on Virginias problems. Kaine, however, is defending his selection. He says the DNC job is part-time, unpaid, and will be relatively undemanding during the first year. Kaine will take over the DNC full-time in 2010 when his term ends as governor.

January 07, 2009 - Virginia Governor Tim Kaine is set to become the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Meanwhile, a former chair of the D.N.C. has launched his campaign to succeed Kaine as governor. Terry McAuliffe kicked off a weeklong,16-stop tour of Virginia early this morning in Norfolk. He's focusing his campaign on the economy, stressing his business credentials and pledging a pragmatic, nonpartisan approach. McAuliffe is a former adviser to President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton and a prolific Democratic fundraiser. He's been hinting at a run for governor for months and his formal announcement sets up a three-way fight for the Democratic nomination with former state Delegate Brian Moran and state Senator Creigh Deeds. On the Republican side, Attorney General Bob McDonnell is running uncontested.

January 07, 2009 - Montgomery County police are investigating the department's handling of a multi-vehicle crash involving an assistant fire chief. Assistant Fire Chief Gregory DeHaven struck a police car and another car, and then hit a third vehicle on a ramp to Interstate 270 near Rockville on Nov. 30. He was driving a county sport utility vehicle at the time.
