Former Bank Manager Sentenced In Tax Office Scandal

January 06, 2009 - A former bank manager has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison for his role in a tax scandal that cost the District of Columbia nearly $50 million. Walter Jones helped deposit nearly $18 million in fraudulent checks while working at Bank of America after he was befriended by the scheme's mastermind, Harriette Walters. Prosecutors say Jones received cash gifts totaling at least $366,000.in exchange for his help

Bike to the Inauguration

January 06, 2009 - Metro riders will probably face long waits and crowded conditions on Inauguaration Day and some roads and bridges to downtown DC will be closed. That's why the District Department of Transportation and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association are recommending taking a bicycle to get to the Inauguration.

The Association will offer free valet parking for bikes in two locations...at the Jefferson Memorial and north of the White House off K street.

Battle Brewing Over Montgomery County Police Chief's Plan

January 06, 2009 - Montgomery County's police chief wants his officers to have the power to ask people arrested for violent crimes about their immigration status. Executive Ike Leggett says a delicate balance must be struck in changing the current policy, which does not allow police to ask anyone arrested about their immigration status. Many Latino leaders feel any changes would create something akin to racial profiling, since the vast majority of immigrants in Montgomery County are Latino. Leggett says avoiding that is his top priority.

Obama Motorcade Draws Spectators

January 06, 2009 - The inauguration is just over two weeks away but the excitement is already starting to build in D.C. A mob of reporters staked out the Obama children's first day of school yesterday and even the motorcades are becoming spectator sports. Cynthia Harris is standing on the corner of H and Vermont Streets in Northwest D.C. She's wearing about as much Obama gear as physics allows. She isn't the only one. There are about half-a-dozen others here, as well as cops and journalists from as far away as Japan. Patrick Madden reports...

Recovered Stolen Items On Display

January 06, 2009 - The D.C. Metropolitan Police have put on public display hundreds of recovered stolen items Inside the D.C. Armory some twenty young police academy recruits help arrange hundreds of stolen property items on the gymnasium floor. Amid the menagerie of pedestrian items - power tools, ladders, mountain bikes - lie muted objects that hold intensely personal stories, if only they could speak. Detective Stein holds an American flag carefully folded into a triangle.

Special Election in Alexandria

January 06, 2009 - Residents of Alexandia, Virginia have until five this afternoon to register to vote in an upcoming special election between Democrat Charniele Herring and Republican Joe Murray. The election is being held to replace Brian Moran, who resigned from the Virginia House of Delegates, and is now focusing on a run for governor of the commonwealth. There are several ways to register; one is to send a letter postmarked by today to the Office of Voter Registration. Another is to go online to alexandriavoter.org The election is set for January 13th.

Conservation Group Sues E.P.A. Over Chesapeake Bay

January 06, 2009 - An environmental group is suing the Environmental Protection Agency over its campaign to clean-up the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation filed a federal lawsuit yesterday to force the EPA to enforce the Clean Air Act. Since 1983, the EPA has overseen the effort the clean up the bay. But CFB president Will Baker says the estuary has not improved over the years and he blames the EPA for pursuing a policies of environmental de-regulation. The EPA says it's focused on cleaning up the Bay and not legal confrontations. Plus, it says it isn't fair to blame the federal government for all of the bay's pollution. Other plaintiffs in the lawsuit include several politicians, like former D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams, and watermen's associations from both Maryland and Virginia. Patrick Madden reports...

President-Elect Obama Adds "Youth Ball" to Inaugural Celebration

January 06, 2009 - President-elect Barack Obama is adding a "Youth Ball" to the parties planned to celebrate his inauguration. The Presidential Inaugural Committee says it will be for people between the ages of age 18 and 35 and will celebrate the role young Americans can play in serving their communities. Tickets will be available for $75, half the cost of most inaugural balls. There will be a total of ten official galas. In addition to the youth ball and a "Neighborhood Ball" for D-C residents among others, there will be five regional celebrations for invited guests from different parts of the country; a ball for guests from Mr. Obama's home states of Illinois and Hawaii; and one for those from Vice President-elect Joe Biden's home states of Delaware and Pennsylvania. The tenth is the Commander-in-Chief's Ball for members of the military.

Another Arrest Linked to "Stop Snitching'' Videos

January 06, 2009 - Another person linked to the "Stop Snitching" videos, which threaten police informants, is facing federal charges in Baltimore. The charges against 38-year-old Eric Bailey are part of a six-year investigation that has led to the arrest of nearly four dozen people. In a 2004 DVD, Bailey called "rat poison" a cure for informants.

Pants Suit Returns

January 06, 2009 - The former District of Columbia judge who unsuccessfully sued his dry cleaners for $54 million over a lost pair of pants isn't giving up. Roy Pearson has filed a petition with the D.C. Court of Appeals, requesting that his case be reheard - again - this time by a nine-judge panel. Pearson had argued that Custom Cleaners failed to live up to its promise of "Satisfaction Guaranteed" when it returned the wrong pair of pants. Three appellate judges ruled in December that Pearson failed to show the store's advertising amounted to fraud and said his argument defied logic. In asking for a hearing before the entire court, Pearson argues he has issues that the three-judge panel failed to address. Sabri Ben-Achour reports...

President-elect Barack Obama's New Limo Arrives

January 06, 2009 - President-elect Barack Obama's new ride has arrived. The Detroit News reports that a new model of a presidential limousine made by General Motors has been delivered to the Secret Service. The armored 2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine will make its debut at Obama's Jan. 20 inauguration in Washington.

Prince William County State Of The County

January 06, 2009 - 2009 will be the toughest financial year ever. That's what the head of the Prince William County board of supervisors said in the annual state of the county address. Board chairman Corey Stewart says the declining housing market hit the county particularly hard, meaning falling real estate tax revenue and a projected 190 million budget shortfall for the next fiscal year.

January 06, 2009 - Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia says he will try once again to make all restaurants and bars smoke-free.For the past several years, Democratic legislators have tried to get a smoking ban passed in the general assembly and each time the measure failed. Virgina is the country's third-largest tobacco grower and the industry is considered vital to the state's economy

Congress Returns, Debate Over Stimulus Takes Center Stage

January 06, 2009 - Congress is back and debate over a huge economic stimulus bill is underway. No one yet knows how big the economic stimulus plan will be. Anywhere from 800 billion on up is possible. A huge chunk of the money will go to infrastructure projects, probably according to an existing formula.

As Todd Zwillich reports, the District's representative wants DC to double its money in the bill.....
