(Dec 20) CHRISTMAS & CHANUKAH MEET ON THE MALL A Christmas/Chanukah Walking Tour of D.C. takes place tomorrow at 3:30pm, meeting outside the McPherson Square Metro Station at the White House exit. With the lighting of the National Menorah, the event kicks off the beginning of Chanukah and is a harbinger of Christmas Eve a few days later. Historical presentations and performances highlight the seasonal aspects of both holidays, and you can get a good look at the 50 individually-decorated Christmas trees honoring each U.S. state and territory, while warming yourself by the blazing Yule log and sipping hot cocoa.

December 19, 2008 - Nearly five times as many Washington-area consumers feel confident about the state of the local economy than about the rest of the nation. The Greater Washington Consumer Confidence Index shows that almost two-thirds of DC-area residents believe the Obama Administration and a stable job market will improve their economic situation during the next six months.

December 19, 2008 - One of the agencies helping to feed D.C.'s hungry is called Food for All. It's led by a Hindu monk named Peter Sage. Michael Leard accompanied Sage on a recent food delivery in Anacostia.

December 19, 2008 - Some young men living at a group home in D.C. are helping to spread the Christmas spirit to others. They live near Dupont Circle at the Renaissance House run by the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services. One young man says he and three other at-risk teens living at the house are adopting a once-homeless family this Christmas.
"During thanksgiving we was out delivering baskets for community service, we went to this family and knocked on this door," he said. "Kids opened the door and it made me feel sad."
The young men are collecting toys for the family which they will deliver next week.

December 19, 2008 - A new crime prevention initiative in D.C.'s Trinidad neighborhood that was troubled by violence this past summer, is underway. The initiative called "Safe City" is Police chief Cathy Lanier's latest strategy to tackle crime in the Northeast neighborhood, where police set up check points after a string of shootings during the summer. Lanier says 30 "real-time" cameras will be mounted on street corners and 200 cell phones, programmed to call 911, will be distributed to residents. What makes the initiative unique, Lanier says, is that the cameras are being paid for by the retailer Target, and the cell phones by Sprint/Nextel.
