September 04, 2008 - (Sept 4-27) POTUS AMONG US Washington Improv Theater remounts POTUS Among Us, an interactive political performance at the recently renovated Source Theater on 14th Street Northwest, opening tonight and running through September 27. This quadrennial election show brings fun and levity to the current political climate, where audiences create the political platform for these improvisational actors to play out, controlling the final outcome of a "staged" election.
(Through Sept 27) PICTURING POLITICS 2008 The exhibit Picturing Politics 2008: Artists Speak to Power makes an appearance at the Arlington Arts Center through September 27, with an opening reception tomorrow from 6-9pm. Independent curator, artist, and critic Rex Weil presents a show focused on the intersection of politics and art, from a myriad of individuals and groups including the Veteran's Art Project and the Vietnam Veterans Art Museum.
(Through Sept 18) BLUE The Textile Museum presents BLUE, an exhibit of fabrics dedicated to the calming color, in its downtown gallery through September 18th. From Cookie Monster to cornflowers, the show explores the human perception, creation and meaning of the color blue on textiles produced across time and place. You can chat with experts during a gallery talk and tour next Saturday at 1pm.

September 04, 2008 - Residents of the District are urged to begin preparing now for the possibility of severe weather this weekend. Early forecasts indicate the possibility that the Washington area will experience some fall-out from Tropical Storm Hanna. The storm is expected to reach the District on Saturday. bringing heavy rains and high winds. Residents are urged to review their family plan to be sure information is current and up-to-date. Among the points to consider are what you would do if you and your family members were separated People should also prepare an emergency kit that includes non-perishable food and water, medical supplies, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries and supplies for infants or pets.

September 04, 2008 - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has formally proposed adding a Fort Detrick dump site in Frederick to its list of the nation's most polluted places. The Maryland Department of the Environment sought the listing in hopes that EPA oversight would accelerate the cleanup of toxic industrial solvents in groundwater beneath the post. The site, called Area B, is among 11 proposed additions to the EPA's National Priorities List, commonly known as the Superfund list. The public now has 60 days to comment on the proposed listing.
The Army says it has spent $43 million since 1992 to remove industrial and laboratory wastes from unlined trenches used at Area B from the 1940s to 1970, although the Army has yet to clean up the groundwater contamination.

September 04, 2008 - Nationally, hate crimes based on sexual orientation account for 15 percent of the total. In the District, they regularly account for more than 60 percent. Some say that is partly because outreach efforts by the police department's Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit to encourage better reporting, partly because the gay community in D.C. is so large and visible, and partly because the community is expanding into areas where it hasn't previously been visible. Victims say the underlying reason is hate.

September 04, 2008 - Virginia's attorney general is putting opportunists on notice as Tropical Storm Hanna works its way toward the coast. Bob McDonnell warns that the state's anti-gouging law is in place now that the Governor Tim Kaine has declared a state of emergency. The 2004 law prohibits the charging of "unconscionable" prices for goods and services deemed necessary. The anti-gouging act is in effect for 30 days following the declaration. The measure of gouging is based on whether the price of goods or services grossly exceeds prices charged within 10 days before a disaster.

September 04, 2008 - Virginia Governor Tim Kaine has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of Tropical Storm Hanna. Hanna is moving slowly from the Bahamas toward the East Coast and is expected to come ashore Saturday just south of Virginia. Forecasters say the storm could bring high winds, tornadoes and coastal flooding to the region.

September 04, 2008 - Local officials are bracing for Tropical Storm Hanna, which is headed toward the DC area. Virginia has declared a state of emergency and Maryland might follow suit. Hanna is expected to make landfall in North Carolina Saturday morning. Then, forecasters say, it will likely track north along the Atlantic coastline over the next 24 hours. In Maryland, Governor Martin O'Malley visited the state Emergency Operations Center in Reisterstown to meet with members of his cabinet and emergency management officials. He says the state is placing National Guard troops on heightened alert and coordinating response plans with local jurisdictions.

September 04, 2008 - Republicans gathered in St. Paul for their national convention have the lowest turnout of African-American delegates in 40 years. In St. Paul it's hard to find an African-American face in the crowd. Overall there are just 36 black delegates. That's down 80 percent since 2004. The District has no black delegates at all.
