June 11, 2008 - The House has given tentative approval to a $1.5 billion funding package for Metro. Metro is poised to reap the benefits of the huge infusion of cash , provided Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia also kick in with dedicated funding. Supporters of Metro have long said the federal government should play a role in maintaining and improving it because of its location in the capital. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland says the amendment would authorize $1.5 billion for the system over 10 years, In the Senate, Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn is blocking a bill on Metro funding. He says taxpayers from other parts of the country shouldn`t have to pay for transit in Washington

This moving documentary recounts the continuing "custody battles" between those who adopted animals rescued during Hurricane Katrina and the pets' original owners. "MINE" explores the unique bond between humans and animals, set against the backdrop of one of the worst natural disasters in American history. Proceeds go towards the completion of the film and to fund animal rescue groups nationwide.

June 11, 2008 - The Virginia Court of Appeals has upheld a state law against soliciting a minor for sex over the Internet. Dean Robert Podracky was convicted of breaking the law. He appealed, saying it infringed on his right of free speech. His argument leaned heavily on a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down a federal law against sending indecent messages to minors. But the Virginia appeals court said Podracky didn`t just spread obscenity. It said since he solicited a minor to commit a crime, his communication clearly was not protected by the First Amendment.

June 11, 2008 - Maryland's red fruit are not part of a national scare over tomatoes with salmonella. The state Department of Agriculture says Maryland-grown tomatoes are not part of the multi-state salmonella outbreak that has made nearly 200 people sick. As restaurants and grocery stores yank tomato products from their shelves, authorities say consumers who don't know where their tomatoes have come from should contact the place where they were bought before eating.

June 11, 2008 - Next years Montgomery County Schools budget is $82 million more than this years, but that still leaves the school board $45 million short of what it asked for. That means 66 jobs will have to be cut. Fifty-four of them are in the county`s central office, and 12 are in schools. In addition,182 vacant positions will not be filled. Some expansions will have to be delayed as well.

June 11, 2008 - Maryland's 99 democratic delegates are coming together to push for the election of presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama. The delegates met at Governor Martin O'Malley's home to organize for the Democratic National Convention. They elected two delegation co-chairs -- O'Malley as well as Representative Elijah Cummings. Cummings has been an Obama supporter. O'Malley initially backed Hillary Clinton. But the Governor has gotten behind the Illinois senator since he became the presumptive democratic presidential nominee. O`Malley endorsed Obama Saturday, and he reportedly has been wearing an Obama pin since Clinton suspended her campaign.
