Lawmakers Pass Plan for Prince George's Hospital Center

March 25, 2008 - Emergency legislation , designed to keep the financially-troubled Prince George's Hospital Center open, has passed the Maryland House of Delegates. The bill would create an authority to run the hospital system until it can be sold to a private company. Under the measure, the state would provide $128-million in operating and capital support between fiscal years 2010 and 2015. Prince George's County, which owns the hospital and three related facilities, must put up a total of $131-million from 2008 through 2015. Lawmakers already set aside $50-million last fall to save the non-profit run hospital, which houses the state's second busiest trauma center. The bill now goes to the Senate.

Taxes Collected by NVTA Being Returned

March 25, 2008 - $12 million dollars in taxes and fees collected by the Northern Virginia Transportation Administration will be returned to tax payers beginning April 1st. Virginia governor Tim Kaine signed a bill into law that will return the unconstitutionally collected taxes to those who paid them.

The 1% initial vehicle registration fee and the $10 regional registration fee will be returned by mail automatically beginning in April. For other taxes, including the 5% sales tax on vehicle repair, safety inspection fees, and a rental tax, Virginians can go to the treasury website to find out how get their money back.

The invalidated tax plan leaves a budget hole of over $300 million dollars slated for transportation projects across the state. Governor Kaine has proposed raising the vehicle sales tax but the house of delegates has not responded favorably to that plan, and so there is currently no agreement on how to make up the lost funds.
