February 08, 2008 - Today American University will host the inauguration of its 14th president, Neil Kerwin, and he is looking forward to helping the university grow in new directions. One of the symposia hosted this week in honor of AU president Neil Kerwin focused on the role and the responsibility of academics to comment or propose solutions when it comes to the major issues facing the nation. Kerwin says that in his view, academics should be engaged with the general public, especially at a time of war, economic instability, and social change. Kerwin will be formally installed as the university's president during ceremonies at Bender Arena later this morning.

February 08, 2008 - The House of Delegates has passed legislation to give taxpayers refunds when Virginia has excess revenue in its Rainy Day Fund.

February 08, 2008 - The call is out in the region for election officers. Many jurisdictions are looking for officers at this time. In Virginia for example, Loudoun County is putting the word out they need people to work not only the presidential primary this Tuesday but also for the town, primary and presidential elections all later this year. The pay is a 100 dollars a day, and you must be registered to vote in Virginia and be a U.S. citizen. Contact your local government for more information.

February 08, 2008 - Two local health clinics are handing out Washington Wizards tickets in exchange for a free and confidential HIV test. African Americans represent 85 percent of new aids cases reported in D.C. But Whitman-Walker's Deputy Executive Director Barbara Chinn says even though the black population has been hit hardest by the AIDS epidemic in D.C., the virus does not discriminate. D.C. native Reneto Wilkins was diagnosed with HIV at Whitman-Walker in 1985. He says those who refuse to get tested contribute to the problem. A November study found that one in 20 District residents is infected with HIV.

February 08, 2008 - The zoning board in Walkersville, Maryland has denied a local Muslim group's request for a permit to build a community center on nearby farmland. The board`s decision last night came after days of deliberations, but the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community's request for a special exception for a new recreation and worship center, has been point center of controversy in the town for some months. Board members expressed concern about traffic and the availability of fire equipment, during an annual festival which could have drawn thousands. The project manager for the Ahmadiyya declined to comment after the decision.

February 08, 2008 - Montgomery County officials are offering free acupuncture treatments to recovering drug users.A dozen recovering addicts opted for acupunture in their quest for sobriety this week.. The treatment involves inserting fine needles in specified areas around the ear to relieve anxiety and pain. It`s intended for use with treatments such as medication and therapy. County Council member Duchy Trachtenberg sponsored the $20,000 measure. The money was used to hire a licensed acupuncturist to train about 30 health providers to perform the procedure in jails and outpatient treatment centers.

February 08, 2008 - In Maryland, supporters of Hillary Clinton are rallying for their candidate in advance of next weeks primaries in Maryland, Virginia and the District. In a rally billed as "Maryland Women for Hillary," dozens of female leaders in Maryland in addition to Governor Martin O'Malley and a handful of other male supporters rallied hundreds of Clinton backers in an overflowing Lawyer's Mall in from of the State House.

February 08, 2008 - State police and elections officers in Virginia are warning residents about a possible identity theft scam. The state board of elections says at least a dozen people in central and southern Virginia have received automated phone calls this week telling them to expect a voter registration packet in the mail. The residents say they were instructed by the caller to fill out the packets and mail them in. State Board of Elections Secretary Nancy Rodrigues says the state did not make these calls and does not register voters in that manner. Rodrigues is also warning people not to reveal personal information as a precaution against identity theft. Anyone who has either received such a phone call or a voter registration packet should contact Virginia State Police and elections officials immediately. Rosiland Jordan reports...

February 08, 2008 - As voters in the mid-Atlantic region get ready for next Tuesdays presidential primary, a former Capitol Hill powerhouse makes the case why hes backing Senator Barack Obama on the Democratic ticket.
Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle thought about running for president himself, but decided at the end of 2006 to stay out of the race.
Now he`s drumming up support for Barack Obama, and Daschle says that a high turnout will help Obama win more state delegates to the national convention...
Daschle endorsed Obama a year ago, when he told reporters he felt he could do more good for the Illinois senator earlier, rather than later, in the presidential campaign.

February 08, 2008 - A former Senate Majority Leader says he sees history reborn in Barack Obama's candidacy for the White House. Tom Daschle, the former South Dakota senator, says he saw potential in the Illinois senator's campaign early on, namely in Obama's ability to attract younger voters. The momentum has been building, says Daschle, not just in volunteerism, but in the amount of money donated from individuals. Daschle says the biggest challenge facing the Obama campaign will be winning enough delegates in the upcoming primaries, including the three being held in Maryland, the District, and Virginia next Tuesday.

February 08, 2008 - (Feb 9) KARNEVAL Folks in Germany call their version of Mardi Gras "Karneval" - with a "K". Since the Middle Ages, Karneval has been a time when people shed class distinctions and socialize as equals dressed in decorative masks and festive costumes. Tonight, Washingtonians can don their own costumes - or maybe even a tuxedo - and join in the revelry at Karneval-on-the-Potomac at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Cologne Karneval Celebration is part of the Berlin-DC Capital Connexion event series. Festivities begin at 8, with cuisine, music and dancing straight from the Rhineland.
(Feb 10) SOULIVE Soulive, an eclectic soul trio renowned for their unique blend of jazz and hip-hop, bring their instruments and their voices to the Clarice Smith Center in a funk-filled performance where staying in your seat will hardly be an option. This three-man band featuring a guitar, an organ and drums - has toured nationally with the Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer. They'll play DC on Sunday at 7:30 pm.
(Feb 7-9) AFRICAN AMERICAN ICONS IN THEATER Two pivotal playwrights changed the landscape of American theatre with brilliant and moving portrayals of African American life. Scenes and monologues from the work of Lorraine Hansberry and August Wilson are being staged tonight and tomorrow at the Katzen Arts Center at 8, documenting history, the African diaspora, jazz and religion. Post-performance discussions featuring experts on Hansberry and Wilson will delve into the works of these two American icons.
